Renting a Car in Karpathos: The Complete Guide
Karpathos is a big, mountainous island with some of the most beautiful — and most remote — beaches and villages in the Aegean. Public transport is limited and taxis are few, so a rental vehicle is by far the easiest way to explore at your own pace. This guide covers everything you need to know before you book, based on how things actually work here on the island.
Why you need a vehicle in Karpathos
Many of the island's best spots — like Apella, Achata and the traditional village of Olympos in the north — are hard or impossible to reach without your own transport. Bus connections are infrequent and don't cover most beaches, so having a car, scooter or ATV gives you the freedom to plan your days around the weather and your own schedule.
What you need to rent
The requirements are simple:
- You must be at least 21 years old.
- A valid driver's license held for at least 12 months.
- For licenses not written in Latin characters, an International Driving Permit is required alongside your national license.
No credit card is required to rent — payment can also be made by cash or bank transfer — and we ask for no deposit.
What's included in the price
At Autoland the price you see is the price you pay. Every rental includes:
- Collision Damage Waiver (full insurance protection)
- Unlimited mileage
- 24/7 road assistance
- A second driver at no extra cost
- All taxes, including 24% VAT
There are no hidden charges. Keep in mind that the underside of the vehicle, lost keys, tyres and interior wear are not covered by insurance, and standard vehicles must be driven on paved roads only (4x4 vehicles excepted).
Free airport, port and hotel delivery
We deliver and collect your vehicle from Karpathos Airport (AOK), the port in Pigadia, or your accommodation anywhere on the island, at any time of day — free of charge. Cars and scooters can be delivered to you; ATVs and quads are available from our Pigadia office only.
Car, scooter or ATV?
Which vehicle suits you depends on your trip:
- Cars — the most comfortable choice for couples, families and longer drives to the north of the island.
- Scooters — light, economical and ideal for short hops between Pigadia and the southern beaches.
- ATVs & quads — fun for reaching nearby coves and exploring, available at our office.
Booking, cancellation and fuel
The minimum rental period is two days. You can change or cancel your booking with no cancellation fees up to 3 days before collecting your vehicle. Fuel is paid by the renter, and the vehicle should be returned with the same fuel level it had at pick-up.
Driving tips for Karpathos
Roads on the main routes are good, but the island is mountainous and some stretches — especially the scenic drive up to Olympos and down to Diafani — are winding and narrow, so take your time. Parking in Pigadia is easiest just outside the centre, and a short walk takes you to the harbour and tavernas. Always fill up in Pigadia before heading north, as fuel stations are sparse in remote areas.
